There are a number of breeders who don't remove dewclaws. I can honestly only conclude it's because they prefer the look and that's just what's always been done in their circle. But there are also a lot of breeders who never work their dogs in harness, never sell dogs to serious sledding homes, only have dogs who show or do sports or are pets - and those dewclaws come off.

If a dog rips its dewclaw halfway off on the trail, it's a problem. They'll get caught on lines, they'll get caught on harness webbing, they'll get caught on brush on the trail, etc. There are people with working Siberians who will swear up and down that dewclaws must come off because they are too much of a liability in harness. However, for me personally, I prefer dewclaws left on. I agree that breeders should have the option to do this if they so choose. I'm not a breeder, but I don't think you need to be a breeder to have an opinion on this. Dogs without the double dew claw may be considered "pet quality. The dew claws on a Pyrenees are attached to bone and look almost like a thumb in x-ray. But I would assume if it should be missing a dew claw it would still have the meaty part. That being said that does not mean there is no great Pyrenees in the world that don't have double dew claws. I think what most are trying to say is if you don't know the parents or if you are going to a breeder and paying good money for the dog you should exclude any pup that Don t have double dew claws since you are paying good money. If both father and mother are great Pyrenees then so is your puppy. Having a single dew claw in the back does not disqualify your dog from being a great Pyrenees it disqualifies him from the show ring.
